Week 4 of Pregnancy
Baby's growth
The fertilized egg undergoes a process of division. The cells begin to divide first into 2 cells, then into 4, 8, 16, etc. When the cells reach the 16-cell phase, and continue to divide as it travels from the fallopian tubes to the uterus. When it reaches the uterus, this group of cells already reaches 32 and is called a morula. The cells continue to divide and begin to form a hollow ball called the blastocyst that will implant in the endometrium. Over time, this site of implantation will become the placenta. During pregnancy, the placenta nourishes and protects your developing baby.
Changes in mother
Your body is producing a lot of hormones needed for the baby's growth. Probably in these first weeks, your need for sleep will increase, you will feel nauseous and want to urinate more often.
Don't worry, all these changes are normal. Every pregnancy is different and you may or may not feel the same symptoms of your previous pregnancy. You may also have symptoms you never felt before.
It's good you know...
Make an appointment with your doctor for your first prenatal exam as soon as you think you are pregnant. Since your pregnancy is just beginning, try to drink plenty of water to moisturize your skin and use generous amounts of moisturizing creams to avoid stretch marks. Check to see if you are taking any medications, stop smoking, drinking alcohol, and using illegal drugs. Also try to take care of your feeding, as your baby's development depends largely on this.
